Dominic KempDominic flopped onto the nearest couch and breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn't been able to get a moment to himself since he got here early this morning. His head hurt just thinking about all the procedures he went through. The only reason that Thatcher lady had let him out of her office was because his I.D. wasn't ready yet. She had told to go explore the campus while they finished it, since he still didn't know what room they had given him. I wonder if I'll have a roommate . . . . Dom still knew next to nothing about Spiral Hills High, except that it was a boarding school for kids will special powers and his grandmother apparently wanted him to go here.
She probably had a power, too, then. Dominic shook his head when he thought about the moment when he had read the note on the plane, which informed him of his power: casting. He suddenly began staring at the far wall, concentrating on the image of a book. For a few seconds, a red book hovered in the air in front of the wall, then Dom lost concentration. He let out a shaky breath, now aware that he had been holding it in while casting.
Amazed at what he had just done, Dom looked around the library to see if anyone else had seen the book. Only a few students were in sight; Dominic guessed most of them were in their dorms. None of them seemed to have even noticed he was there. Sighing, he grabbed a book off the stack next to him. The title read A History of Werewolves. Dominic briefly paged through before deciding that it wasn't interesting enough. Setting it down and grabbing the next book--Legendary Warriors--he started to read it with bored interest.
Checking his watch, he found that it had only been ten minutes since he had entered the library. How long does it take these people to print an I.D. card? After another five minutes, Dominic decided that he would die from the sappiness if read another story about how so-and-so the perfectly handsome warrior fought off so-many-thousand enemies to save the love of his life. Dropping the book back on the table next to the couch, he pulled a pamphlet out of his pocket. The Thatcher person had given it to him, along with several others. This one was about the dorms. He might as well know about the place where he was going to live. Opening it up, he began to read the part labeled "Boy's Dorms."

Dawn of Morning "Whispers make their way to me, calling me ever so persistently. 'Come outside and learn of wonders untold, all in the dawning light of morning.'" Dawn entered the library her pale blue gown making a pleasant swishing sound as she glided across the floor. Her friend, Hermes was napping in his secret pocket inside of her voluptuous garb. Her waist length hair was down for once and she shook her head, lingering in the delight of having it free instead of pulled back in a severe bun or braid. She ducked her head suddenly when she heard a cough behind me. It was one of the librarians. She was an older lady and she didn't like Dawn much because of the time Hermes had scared her. The librarian cleared her throat again and the small girl considered leaving the library, but then in a sudden burst of courage she lifted herself to the unimpressive height of four feet and continued to her favorite nook. Dawn breathed a sigh of relief as she was surrounded by her familiar "office." She used this small part of the library to study and to take care of all the extra assignments teachers asked her to research. Dawn settled into the chair behind the small cubicle style desk and opened the books she had left behind when she was here last. Soon the pale girl was deeply entrenched in her work and time passed by until it was almost noon. Dawn suddenly felt something moving, and she smiled as a small scaly white head popped out from her dress. The little creature emerged completely from his warm nest and made his way up onto the desk. He spread his shimmering body all over Dawn's work and then stretched just like a little cat. His leathery wings spread out as he leisurely soaked up the thin sunlight. Dawn smiled and poked the dragon.
"Thou naughty little Fey, I need to return to my work."
Hermes just snapped at her finger playfully and stayed there. She felt his presence in her mind and she knew what he wanted. The girl looked all around her to see if anyone was paying attention to her little scene. When she saw no one was she turned back to Hermes and rested a gentle hand on his spiny back. An odd thing started to happen, her pale hand started to glow a sweet yellow light. Hermes purred as she moved her glowing hand back and forth across his body. He absorbed it and soon his dull skin started to glow as bright as Dawn's hand. Then Dawn stopped and withdrew her hand a small smile playing across her mouth. She gently caressed Hermes small spiny head. The little dragon was fully satiated now, and he latched onto Dawn's sleeve and expertly climbed up until he was balancing on her shoulder. She patted him, and then turned back to her books.
"No, this will not work. I need the Complete Works on Light as Pertaining to the Universe."
She stood to her feet and glided out of her little nook. On the other side of the library, where she knew there was a copy of the book she needed. She walked into the little alcove which included a couch and was surprised to see someone sitting there. She stopped a hand over her mouth as she breathed out a startled "Oh," and then backed up accidentally into a bookcase. There weren't many students at SHH right now because it was summer vacation. Only the ones who either didn't have anyone to go back to, or who were staying behind to finish up some work. In Dawn's case, it was both reasons. Turning her attention back upon the stranger, she stared at him with her strange opal colored eyes and smiled slightly,
"I am sorry. I did not know thou wert here. Most do not wish to linger in this part of the library, for it has some very dull books."
She spoke in an odd way, her voice musical and sounding almost like poetry. She chuckled at her statement and then proceeded to curtsy her dress gently billowing about her in a pale blue wave. She spoke again her voice soft,
"My name is Dawn of Morning. What are thee called by?"

Completely absorbed in the description of the dorms and picturing what his own room would look like, Dominic jumped when the bookcase next to him rattled. Immediately recovering himself, and thanking his lucky stars he didn't scream, bolt, or do anything embarrassing, he tried to relax again. He had been jumpy ever since. . . Dom hated feeling like a scared rabbit; he knew Spiral Hills was safe, but he just couldn't shake off his unease. Suddenly he stiffened. Dominic could sense someone behind him. He didn't know what tipped him off, but somehow he knew. Slowly turning around, he braced himself for what he might find there.
"I am sorry. I did not know thou wert here. Most do not wish to linger in this part of the library, for it has some very dull books."
A look of confusion twisted Dom face. His mouth was open in surprise, with one eye slightly squinted at the person he had found while the eyebrow over the other was raised. It took a few moments for Dominic to realize what his face was doing and change it to a normal expression. The cause of his odd look? The girl he had sensed behind him was nothing like what he had expected to find. For starters, she wore a billowy blue ball gown that would have fit more with 16th century England than a modern high school. Not to mention her strange accent: thou? wert? While the girl laughed at some humor in her words that Dom had missed, he tried to smile politely. All the while he was thinking, Back away slowly from the crazy chick, Dom. Just back. Away. Slowly. He nearly followed his own instructions when the girl looked at him and spoke again.
"My name is Dawn of Morning. What are thee called by?"
Dom kept the polite smile plastered on his face, but it had a slightly pained look to it. Her smile, however, was genuinely welcoming and friendly. Dominic cursed himself for assuming so much about her. She's probably some kind of. . .drama student, practicing for a play. I hope. Shaking his head, both to clear it and to get his bangs out of his eyes, he tried to speak in a normal voice. I'm Dom, Dominic Kemp. He paused, looking for something to add; talking to girls wasn't his strong point. So. . . So, Dawn of Morning? Is Morning like you last name?

Dawn of Morning "Loneliness is my faithful companion. And everywhere I walk, I am met with hate. I thank thee, Lord, for my ever gentle companions, but just once couldn't one be human?" Dawn's friendly demeanor fell as she realized she had startled the poor youth. The girl dipped her head, a blush reddening her pale cheeks. She was about to apologize for barging in on him when Hermes hissed something in her head.
"You've already apologized, Dawn. No need to repeat yourself."
Dawn looked up from the detailed examination of her gown's hem and into the boy's eyes. She saw bewilderment, confusion, and what looked like fear? No, it was more like an intense desire to leave Dawn's presence. As suddenly as Dawn's smile had came it left and her whole countenance faltered. Then the look was gone, but Dawn knew she had not imagined it. The strange girl had seen it to many times to doubt, or hope. Hermes spiny back bristled up and his color started to change, a sure sign that he was angry. The hurt girl, however, did not notice. The boy in an attempt to cover up his earlier emotions spoke,
"I'm Dom, Dominic Kemp. So. . . So, Dawn of Morning? Is Morning like you last name?" He said with a pained smile.
Dawn was planning on making some short, embarassed reply to his attempt, but her plan was foiled by Hermes disgust at his lame attempt to restore peace. Hermes looked on his Dawn, his dear friend, with sadness and then glided in circles around her all the way to the floor. He went up to the youth and he seemingly grew in size until he looked to be the size of a large dog. The normally white dragon's color changed to a deep crimson red in an instant and it looked as if spitting fire was next on the list. Dawn looked on in horror at her friend's actions, frozen. Then just as the dragon walked toward Dominic menacingly Dawn went down and scooped the large dragon up into her thimbs limbs, he seemed to be almost spilling out from her arms. Hermes, not wanting to hurt the tiny girl, quickly shrank to his normal size. His color remained the same however, and his black pupiless eyes glared daggers at Dominic. Dawn tried some stuttered attempts at speech, but she failed the first few times. Finally, she returned Hermes to his pocket den, although the dragon didn't go without a fight and then looked apologetically at Dominic. She spoke quickly frightened at what he would say,
"Please, forgive Hermes. He's a Fey, or a dragon if thou prefers the term, and one especially sensitive to emotions. Sadly also he lovest a good chance at "pranking" as I hath been told the word is. He is aptly named after a Greek trickster god."
Although what Dawn said was truth, she failed to mention that Hermes was not playing a trick this particular time. In all innocence, however, she was trying to keep Dominic from being embarassed by his lack of civility toward Dawn, which was partially why Hermes had reacted so violently. Dawn in her usual thought process was not thinking of herself. Selflessness had been a hard lesson for the small girl to learn in her childhood, but learn it she eventually had. And so instead of paining young Dominic any further she chose to leave.
"Once again, I am sorry to disturbeth thou. Please accepteth my most humblest apologies."
And with that the tiny girl turned around and started toward to exit of the little alcove. Her steps were slow however, betraying the intense desire she had to stay and converse with perhaps the friendliest human she had met in weeks. Selflessness was a hard lesson to keep when learned. A still silence, cold and unwelcoming as the grave, settled over the library. Dom knew he had put his foot in his mouth as soon as he saw Dawn's smile disappear. Scratch that--he had shoved both of them down his throat. It looked like whatever Dawn was holding in her arms agreed with him. Dom hadn't noticed it before, but the girl was holding what appeared to be a small pet. As its back arched up in a blatant show of anger, Dominic, not sure whether he should be surprised or not, realized it was either a dragon, or a lizard that looked just like one. He hadn't come away from those knight-and-princess stories with nothing. Unfortunately, it didn't look like it was a maiden the dragon was after. Dom slowly rose to his feet as the dragon grew in size and came at him. Flinching, he prepared for the crimson body to land on him, but the extra weight never came. Opening his eyes, he saw that Dawn had gathered the reptilian mass into her arms, though it was obviously too big for that. It would have been funny if the dragon hadn't been so full of sharp points.
"Please, forgive Hermes." Dom opened his mouth to protest her apology, as it was he who should have been asking for forgiveness. Dawn didn't stick around long enough to hear anything from him, however. Dominic mentally kicked himself. If anything, he should have explained why he was so startled. She probably hated him right now. First day on campus and you make the first person you meet think you're a jerk. Way to go, Dom." Maybe it wasn't too late to explain?
Throwing himself into a run. he tried to catch up with the retreating girl. "Wait up!" he called, not really believing that she would. Thankfully, her pace was slow and he overtook her easily. "Look, I'm sorry for acting weird, but you're the first student I've met here and . . ." Dominic paused in frustration, trying to find words that conveyed what he meant. "Don't take it personally; I've never been good at starting conversations." He looked down at the dragon in her arms and gave her a weak and apologetic smile. "The place I came from is pretty different from where you used to live, I'm betting. We don't exactly have dragons roaming the streets." He hoped she wouldn't take his attempted humor the wrong way, seeing as she already viewed him as an insensitive jerk. After taking another glance at Hermes, he asked, in all seriousness, "He's not going to try to attack me again, is he?"

Dawn of Morning "Loneliness is my faithful companion. And everywhere I walk, I am met with hate. I thank thee, Lord, for my ever gentle companions, but just once couldn't one be human?" Dawn heard a shout behind her, and before she could stop Dominic was standing in front of her looking a bit uneasy due to Hermes, most likely.
"Look, I'm sorry for acting weird, but you're the first student I've met here and don't take it personally; I've never been good at starting conversations."
Dawn's face softened as she took in the downcast state of Dominic. She was about to reach out a hand to grab his, and comfort him when she felt Hermes nip her in his little pocket den. She started, but the movement was hardly noticeable. She shifted onto the heels of her feet and ignored her earlier impulse. She didn't even try to reason with Hermes, she knew how he was when he got into a mood. Dominic looked down at the dragon's head as he popped up from his pocket den. He smiled at Dawn and spoke,
"The place I came from is pretty different from where you used to live, I'm betting. We don't exactly have dragons roaming the streets." Then he stared at Hermes warily and asked, "He's not going to try to attack me again, is he?"
Dawn was just about to answer when the small dragon leaped from her pocket hissed at Dom and then spread his wings and took off out the window. Dawn hearda shriek and her eyes widened in fear. It sounded like the librarian was frightened by Hermes again. Hurriedly Dawn began to speak since she knew she wouldn't have much time with Dom,
"I hail from this earth, just as you do. The only difference thou sees are the strange creatures that followeth me. I would telleth you they hath been mine only friends since I was a babe, but that is only partially truth. And once again I apologize for Hermes rash behaviour. And I understandeth what thou says. Most people do not wish to speaketh to me. They say I "talk weird." Then Dawn looked up at Dom and smiled her opal eyes reassuring him and saying she forgave him, after all it wasn't his fault she was so strange. "And I do not thinketh thou has problems with conversations at all. It was pleasant meeting you Dominic Kemp.
Dawn then bowed her head and waited for the librarian to come in to scold her. The slight girl didn't have to wait long. The librarian stormed into the alcove clearly enraged. She totally ignored Dominic but latched her eyes onto the trembling Dawn. The librarian was a very robust woman, her build almost reminiscent of a army general. She towered over the very small Dawn. Her grey hair was pulled back into a severe bun making her eyes pop out even more then they were already. She grabbed Dawn's arm and looked around to see if anyone was watching her. She saw no one in sight, for she didn't see Dom because he was directly behind her. She then shook Dawn violently and threw her to the ground. Dawn collapsed in a heap on the ground as the librarian started yelling at Dawn, in a voice loud enough for only the three people in the room to hear,
"You little freak show, I told you to keep those little creatures that follow you under control. I swear if that freaky hippy teacher Jyl didn't talk the Dean into letting you stay. Now get out of here before I throw you out."
Dawn nodded her head and struggled to her feet before tripping over her feet. The librarian swore and looked as if she were about to smack the girl but then restrained herself. Dawn looked up at Dominic and shook her head. Her eyes told him how sorry she was that he had to be in such a awkward situation. For;; Misted Vision-Dominic Kemp//OPEN.
